Deal of the decade: Bahrain clinches 10 year WEC hosting pact

The extension moves Bahrain past the status of a recurring flyaway round, solidifying the Sakhir venue as a foundational pillar of international endurance racing alongside legendary European tracks like Le Mans and Spa. The 10 year commitment cements Bahrain’s position as a premier global hub for elite motorsport. As a foundational partner that has featured on the calendar since WECs (World Endurance Championship) inaugural 2012 campaign, this long term renewal ensures that despite the aggressive growth of neighbouring regional circuits, the “spirit of Le Mans” has its definitive Middle Eastern home in Sakhir.

The decision to commit to a 10 year term reflects the immense confidence generated by the current golden era of sports car racing. The explosion of manufacturer backing in the hypercar and LMGT3 tiers gives both the FIA WEC along with regional partners. Long term financial security required to confidentiality ink in a deal stretching well past the series’ 20th anniversary.

Shaikh Salman bin Isa AI Khalifa, Chief Executive of Bahrain International Circuit on carrying the “spirit of Le Mans” beyond the next decade.

We are therefore delighted that the spirit of Le Mans will continue in Bahrain through the 20th anniversary of the series and well beyond.”

Mentioning the “20th anniversary of the series and well beyond” underlines an exceptionally rare level of stability in modern motorsport. It guarantees manufacturers who are investing multi million dollar budgets into WEC that the championship’s most crucial logistics, end of season testing and awards hub will remain completely unchanged until at least 2036.

This long term extension acts as major defensive play in the competitive geography of global motorsport. As neighbouring countries aggressively fund high profile, state backed racing facilities, Bahrain has effectively locked down its status as the historic, undisputed home of international endurance racing in the Middle East. Rather than bouncing between flyaway tracks based on short term financial incentives, WEC has committed to a venue that has actively grown its local fan base and race day attendance since the series’ inception 2012 cementing a genuine regional racing tradition.

The 10 year term permanently anchors the “spirit of Le Mans” in the Middle East. As neighbouring nations aggressively build multi million dollar tracks to bid for high profile racing series, Bahrain long term deal effectively shuts out regional rivals. From taking over the final chapter of WECs narrative, defending Sakhir’s historic position as the undisputed pioneer of elite endurance racing in the region.
