Was Ocon the peak partner? Why Gasly's most defining team mate might still be the one who knew him best
Esteban Ocon was Pierre Gasly’s “best” team mate in terms of drama. Their history from childhood friends to bitter rivals created a pressure cooker that neither had faced before. Despite their feud, they secured a historic double podium for Alpine at the 2024 Brazilian Grand Prix. Gasly admitted they had “enough history to fill a documentary” and described their relationship their co-existence as awkward but professionally respectful. Ocon forced Gasly to remain 100% focused, there was no “junior driver” to mentor here.
The Gasly Ocon era at Alpine ended in a cocktail of historic success and toxic tension. Despite the high of Brazil, the relationship remained “strained.” Ocon was released by Alpine one race early in 2024 to join Haas for 2025, while Gasly remained as Alpine’s leader. Ocon was the “best” team mate for Gasly because he provided constant validation. Before Ocon, Gasly’s reputation was tethered to his failure against Max Verstappen. By matching and occasionally beating Ocon, who himself had matched Fernando Alonso, Gasly proved he was an elite tier driver capable of leading a factory team.
The relationship was never “best” in a friendly sense but it was “best” for team’s engineering focus.
Gasly once said in an interview: “I know Esteban won’t invite me for dinner but I’m fine with that … I need Esteban to be pushing me to prove the car.”
Gasly noted that his relationship with Ocon was far more “formal” and “responsible” than his time with Yuki Tsunoda, where he acted more as a mentor than a rival.
A critical insight is that Ocon was the team mate who finally cured Gasly’s Red Bull trauma. In 2026, Gasly is operating with a level of “alpha” confidence he never had before. On the account of he survived the “French civil war,” he has earned the right to lead the 2026 Alpine-Mercedes project as the undisputed #1. Ocon and Gasly were so identical in their feedback that Alpine was able to develop a very singular aerodynamic direction. The current year, Gasly is struggling slightly more with Franco Colapinto because his driving style is vastly different, forcing the team to split their development resources for the first time in years.
While Ocon was the “best” for Gasly’s resume, he was arguably the worst for his mental energy and team stability. Gasly described the relationship as “very formal” and admitted Ocon “won’t invite me for dinner.” Unlike his “little brother” bond with Tsunoda, the Ocon partnership was built on a foundation of mutual spite and 15 years of baggage. The 2026 season has already highlighted the “Ocon challenge.” Since Ocon’s departure to Haas, Gasly has flourished as the undisputed #1 at Alpine.
