Mercedes locks down 2026: AMG roars in as F1's full time safety and medical car powerhouse
Mercedes AMG has officially confirmed it will be exclusive provider of both the Formula One (F1) Safety Car (SC) and Medical Car (MC) for every race of the 2026 season. Since 2021, Mercedes had shared these duties with Aston Martin but following Aston Martin’s decision to conclude its agreement at the end of 2025, Mercedes will return to the sole provider it held for 25 years prior. The announcement is significant because it marks a “re-consolidation” of safety operations as F1 enters a massive new era of technical regulations in 2026. Throughout 2026 marking the 30th anniversary of Mercedes AMG’s continuous service as an F1 SC provider, a partnership that began at the 1996 French Grand Prix. This deal cements Mercedes as the “trusted baseline” for on track safety in the sport’s history. The long time SC driver, Bernd Maylander, is set to reach a historic milestone in 2026 – 500 Grand Prixs in the driver’s seat. His continuity, paired with the familiar Mercedes machinery provides the field with a trusted “leader” during the chaos of the new 2026 car regulations.
From 1996 to 2020, Mercedes held an exclusive monopoly on F1’s official cars. In 2021, F1 introduced a 50/50 split with Aston Martin to share the financial and logistical burden of a rapidly expanding 24 race calendar in addition to providing a high profile marketing platform for the British brand’s return to the grid. Following the 2022 Australian Grand Prix, Max Verstappen famously labelled the Aston Martin a “green turtle,” complaining that it was too slow to allow drivers to keep heat in their tyres which led to safety concerns during restarts. By taking back sole control in 2026, Mercedes celebrates the 30th anniversary of its association with the role. The FIA prioritised returning to a single supplier for 2026 to ensure technical consistency across the entire season as the sport navigates the “unknowns” of the massive 2026 regulatory reset.
According to the official release from Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team emphasises that 2026 is not just another season but a celebration of three decades of continuous service to the FIA. “Beyond the machinery, 2026 carries emotional weight … It marks the 30th anniversary of Mercedes’ partnership with Formula One … a number that reflects decades of calm, precise work in some of the sport’s most chaotic moments.”
Mercedes’ focus on their “140th anniversary” and “30 years of safety” frames this deal as more than a contract – it is a legacy. It reinforces their position as the “guardian of the grid” at a time when they are also introducing their new W17 challenger.
For Mercedes, this is a massive marketing victory during a year when they are also tipped to be the new engine era. By celebrating their 30th anniversary in this role, Mercedes positions itself as the “adult in the room” while new manufacturers like Audi and Ford Red Bull enter the sport. Returning to the exclusive red livery across all 24 races provides 100% of the brand visibility that was previously shared with Aston Martin’s “British Racing Green.” The continuity of Maylander is the “hidden” consequence of this deal. By reaching 500 races in Melbourne, Maylander become the most experienced “safety officer” in racing history. His ability to handle the “chaotic moments” of a new era is vital asset for the FIA. Drivers trust his judgment and having him in a familiar Mercedes car for every race removes a variable of unpredictability during emergency deployments.
For Mercedes, the return to exclusivity is a massive marketing victory that coincides with their 30th anniversary in the role. By displacing Aston Martin, Mercedes secures 100% of the broadcast exposure for the official cars. The prominent red CrowdStrike livery will be a permanent fixture, associating the “three pointed star” with the sport’s highest pressure moments. Amidst the chaos of the 2026 technical reset – where new manufacturers like Audi and Ford are entering – Mercedes positions itself as the “adult in the room,” the trusted guardian that has seen the sport through 13 different model generations since 1996.
