Netflix set the 27th of February for Drive to Survive season 8 as F1's drama packed 2026 season goes global
Netflix has officially confirmed the release date for Drive to Survive season eight as the 27th of February. The new season will document the dramatic 2025 Formula One (F1) World Championship, specifically focusing on the usual “fly on the wall” footage of team politics and off track headlined that defined the 2025 season. The release is strategically timed for the 27th of February – exactly one week before the Australian Grand Prix. It serves as a vital marketing tool to build “hype” for the upcoming season by recapping the intensity of the previous one, especially since 2026 marks a massive technical change for F1. In 2025 was a landmark year in F1 history featuring a rare two point gap in the championship standings and the coronation of a new champion in Lando Norris. Season eight will provide the definitive, cinematic look at how McLaren managed the internal rivalry between Norris and Oscar Piastri which was a major talking point throughout the year.
To understand why the 27th of February releases is so highly anticipated, you have to look at the massive storylines that Netflix was filming behind the scenes. While Netflix was filming, the entire structure of F1 was shifting toward the 2026 reset. Sauber began its transition into Audi and Cadillac officially confirmed Sergio Perez along with Valtteri Bottas for its 2026 debut. Throughout 2025 saw breakout performances from Kimi Antonelli and Ollie Bearman, who will both be full time stars in 2026.
Peter Gay-Rees, Executive Producer Drive to Survive hints that season eight will lean into the “extremely b*****” and dramatic nature of 2025’s internal team politics. “Part of the fight is trying to work out which teams are going to blow up or which driver pairing are going to be problematic … There’s going to be cheesy storylines.” The terminology of “recharging” for the future is present even in these 2025 farewells, setting the stage for the massive technical reset F1 undergoes this year.
By the time the show releases on the 27th of February, it will serve as a high stakes post mortem of a season that was defined by a distinct analytical theme. By crowing Norris before the 2026 season begins, F1 is officially transitioning the “face of the sport” away from Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton. Episode nine or 10 is expected to act as a “primer” for the new nimble car regulations, using the 2025 drama to explain why the 50/50 hybrid power split is necessary for closer racing.
The 27th of February release date is a calculated move to maximise “pre season hype.” A major consequence of season eight is that it must act as an educational bridge. Episode 10 is expected to explain the complex 2026 power unit (PU) changes to casual fans, ensuring they understand why the cars will look and sound different when they arrive in Melbourne on the 6th of March. The “all at once” drop of 10 episodes encourages binge watching, which historically leads to a 15-20% spike in ticket sales and social media engagement exactly one week before the season opener.
