Blue, pink and back to business: Alpine's A526 launch marks a hard reset for F1's new era

A clean state, a new slate and a desperate hunt for redemption: Alpine has officially pulled the covers off the A526, signalling the start of a radical new era for the Enstone based squad. Following a disastrous 2025 campaign that saw them finish at the bottom of the Constructors’ Standings, BWT Alpine Formula One (F1) Team is betting everything on the 2026 technical overhaul to reset their fortunes. In the biggest shift for the team, Alpine has ditched Renault power in favour of a Mercedes AMG power unit (PU) and gearbox, a partnership leadership hopes will bridge the performance gap immediately. Unveiled in Barcelona, the A526 retains the team’s signature blue and pink livery but represents a “clean sheet of paper” design aimed at mastering the new 2026 regulations. By pivoting their focus to 2026 earlier than most of the grid, Alpine is positioning the A526 not as a new car but as their best and perhaps final chance to return to the front of the pack.

The most significant change is the end of Alpine’s status as a “works” team. Following the closure of the Renault F1 engine programme at Viry-Chatillon, Alpine is now a Mercedes AMG customer. They will utilise the Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrain (engine) and gearbox. Executive Technical Director David Sanchez noted that the team is learning a vocabulary for the 2026 hybrid systems, including “overtake mode,” “boost mode” and “recharge” functions. In a word first for F1, the car was launched on a cruise ship Barcelona. The design features a heavy presence of BWT pink on the halo, engine cover and nose, while the side pods return to a gloss Alpine blue.

The decision to unveil the car on the MSC World Europa cruise ship in Barcelona was seen as a “slick” and “grand” statement, though some analysts noted an “underlying tension” given the team’s last place finish in 2025. While the livery is a continuation of the blue and pink BWT era, fans have generally praised the cleaner integration of the colours on the more compact 2026 chassis. The biggest point of discussion among experts is how quickly Alpine can integrate the Mercedes PU. There is widespread curiosity and some scepticism about whether a “customer” Alpine can out develop the Mercedes works team.

In my honest opinion, the Alpine A526 launch is the ultimate “high stakes gamble” disguised as a fresh start. It is simultaneously the most logical and the most dangerous move the team has ever made. The A526 launch was polished and confident but it felt like a team backed into a corner. They’ve sacrificed their pride and their heritage for this one car. Is it a “new dawn”? Technically, yes. But if they don’t know immediate pace in Bahrain testing that “light at the end of the tunnel” Pierre Gasly mentioned might just be an oncoming train.
