Final showdown at Yas Marina: Norris, Verstappen and Piastri face off in Abu Dhabi decider

Lando Norris heads into the 2025 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix with a 12 point lead over Max Verstappen and 16 over Oscar Piastri. A podium finish will secure his maiden Formula One (F1) title but anything less could allow Verstappen or Piastri to snatch the championship. This marks the first three way title decide since 2010 with echoes of the drama seen in 2021.

Norris: Any podium finish guarantees the championship regardless of rivals’ results

Verstappen: Must win the race and hope Norris finishes outside the top three. A second place could suffice if Norris fails to score

Piastri: Needs to win and for Norris to finish outside the podium while outscoring Verstappen

This is the first three way title decider since 2010, when Sebastian Vettel, Fernando Alonso, Mark Webber and Lewis Hamilton all entered the Abu Dhabi final with a chance at the crown. Vettel ultimately triumphed. The showdown also echoes the dram of 2021 when Verstappen and Hamilton fought to the final lap in Abu Dhabi, a race remembered for its controversial Safety Car (SC) restart. Multi-driver finales are rare in F1 history with only a handful of seasons featuring three or more contenders at the last race.

The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix has been the season ending race since 2014 making 2025 the 12th consecutive year it closes the calendar. The circuit, first introduced in 2009, underwent layout changes in 2021 to improve overtaking and flow but it remains a medium downforce track where strategy plays a critical role. Its unique setting running alongside the marina and under floodlights adds to the spectacle of the championship decider.

Pirelli confirmed the C3 (hard), C4 (medium) and C5 (soft) compounds for Ab Dhabi. Historically, grainining has been a challenge at Yas Marina especially on the softer compounds. However, recent seasons have seen reduced severity thanks to improved tyre construction. This year even the soft tyre is expected to play a role beyond qualifying, potentially in race stints.

The race begins at twilight with temperatures dropping as the evening progresses. As the evolving conditions demand precise pit strategy as timing stops around temperature shifts can make or break a race. Teams must also adapt to track evolution with grip levels improving significantly as rubber builds up through the weekend.

Verstappen arrives seeking a fifth consecutive Drivers’ Championship aiming to extend Red Bull’s dominance. Norris leads the standings by 12 points needing only a podium to secure his maiden title. Piastri, just 16 points behind Norris remains in contention making this the first three way title decider since 2010. the finale echoes the drama of 2021 when Verstappen and Hamilton fought to the last lap in Abu Dhabi.

The race is the last outing for the current 18 inch tyre dimensions introduced in 2022. from 2026, F1 will adopt new technical regulations, including revised tyre specifications, lighter cars and sustainable fuel mandates. Abu Dhabi therefore represents a closing chapter for the current era of car and tyre design, before the sport shifts into its most significant regulatory overhaul in decades.

Yas Marina hosts the season finale for the 12th consecutive year with its twilight start and evolving track temperatures adding strategic complexity. The outcome will not only crown the 2025 champion but also set the tone for F1’s next era. As the finale embodies how pressure, precision and marginal gains define modern F1 while also serving as a bridge to the future.
