Monza awaits: McLaren's title dual takes centre stage at the Italian Grand Prix

The 96th edition of the Italian Grand Prix takes place at the iconic Autodromo Nazionale Monza from the 5th to the 7th of September, serving as round 16 of the F1 season. Monza’s legendary layout, 5.793 km of flat out straights and historic corners like Curva Grande and Parabolica cements its reputation as the fastest track on the calendar as well as a sacred battle ground for drivers in addition to fans alike. The race doubles as a celebration for Pirelli’s 500th Grand Prix as F1’s global tyre partner. All slick tyres and cars will feature a commemorative “500 GP” with the podium ceremony including a special “chimera” trophy designed by Italian artist Nico Vascellari.


Oscar Piastri leads the 2025 F1 Drivers’ Championship with 309 points, just 34 ahead of team mate Lando Norris. It’s the closest intra-team title fight since Lewis Hamilton vs. Rosberg. Norris arrives off a dominant 1-2 finish in Hungary, where he held off Piastri by less than a second. But at Zandvoort, Piastri struck back with pole to win performance while Norris suffered a heartbreaking retirement on lap 65 due to an oil leak. McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella insists the team will remain “neutral and fair” as the rivalry intensifies. Split strategies like Norris’s one-stop win in Hungary are now a tactical variable not a gamble. Ex-drivers like Juan Pablo Montoya warn the battle could “explode” as the stakes rise, especially with both drivers chasing their first world title.


Pirelli has nominated the C3 (hard), C4 (medium) and C5 (soft) compounds. With long pit lane time loss, most teams will aim for a one-stop strategy though high temperatures could push some toward two stops. Monza’s minimal aero setups reduce DRS effectiveness making undercuts and clean air windows more valuable than raw tyre offset. Expect qualifying tow tactics and race day train formations, especially through the Rettifilo and Ascari chicanes where late braking plus positioning are crucial.
